The Golf Grand Slam

TYPOGRAPHY I GRAPHIC DESIGN

QUICK BRIEF:

USING TYPOGRAPHY TO ILLUSTRATE A UNIQUE DESIGN THAT TELLS A LARGER STORY

ABOUT:

The Professional Golfers Association has four Major Golf Tournament events that take place during the season — The Masters Tournament, The U.S. Open, The Open Championship and The PGA Championship. The majors can make or break a player’s career. Each one holds an enormous amount of prestige, history and money that the other PGA Tour events don’t have. Win one of these four tournaments and you could be set for life as a pro golfer.

THE CHALLENGE:

Tell a story through words that live beyond the image. Each of these golf tournaments are amongst the longest-standing traditions in all of sport. How do you capture all of that history and nostalgia in an authentic way?

THE CREATIVE CONCEPT:

Here, I wanted to cement the legacy of each tournament by using past champions to outline the iconic symbols of each. When put together, side-by-side, the larger story of the sport of golf is revealed.

THE MASTERS

Since 1934, the Masters Tournament has been home to some of golf’s greatest moments. Amidst blooming azaleas, towering pines and flowering dogwoods, the first full week of April ushers in a stage unique to golf and to sport. Over four days and 72 holes, the smallest field in major championship golf competes for a chance to capture the Green Jacket and a place in Masters history. T

In addition to the Tournaments time-honored traditions, many professional golfers also say that Augusta National is the most beautiful golf course they have ever played. The sun seems brighter there, the sky bluer, the wind gentler, the pines more stately, and the azaleas more colorful than on any other golf course in the world.

Scheduled for the first full week in April, the Masters is the first major golf tournament of the year. Unlike the other major tournaments, the Masters is always held at the same location: Augusta National Golf Club a private course in the city of Augusta, Georgia.

A Tradition Unlike Any Other.

THE PGA CHAMPIONSHIP

The PGA Championship is one of four Major titles in the men's professional game. It began in 1916, when the PGA was first established in New York. The first championship was held at the Siwanoy country club in Bronxville. It soon came to be regarded as one of the most esteemed tournaments on the PGA tour. Originally designed as a match-play tournament, it was later changed to a stroke-play event.

The Championship is the only major tournament not to invite amateur golfer to play in the event. As the tournament is governed by the PGA of America, which predominantly comprises of club and teaching professionals, the organization has remained exclusive to professional golfers.

The tournament is commonly the strongest field on the calendar. Of course, the absence of amateurs plays a part in that but the fact remains, if you want to lift the Wanamaker Trophy, you will have to beat a consistently strong field. The field is usually made up of almost all of the world's top 100 players according to the Official World Golf Ranking.

THE UNITED STATES OPEN

The United States Open Championship, commonly known as the U.S. Open, is the annual open national championship of golf in the United States. It is the third of the four major championships in golf. Since 1898 the competition has been 72 holes of stroke play (4 rounds on an 18-hole course), with the winner being the player with the lowest total number of strokes. As of 2022, the U.S. Open awards a $17.5 million purse, the largest of all four major championships.

The U.S. Open demands more from its competitors than any championship in the game. That bears out statistically, no matter how one dives into the numbers. While it is staged at a variety of courses, set up in such a way that scoring is very difficult, with a premium placed on accurate driving. Penalizing rough and fast putting surfaces are perennial course traits at this championship too.

Every year, over 8,000 professional and amateur golfers attempt to qualify for the championship at over 100 different qualifying sites across the country.

Less than 5% actually qualify.

THE BRITISH OPEN

The Open Championship, often referred to as The Open or the British Open, is the oldest golf tournament in the world, and one of the most prestigious. Founded in 1860, it was originally held annually at Prestwick Golf Club in Scotland. Later the venue rotated between a select group of coastal links golf courses in the United Kingdom.

Links golf is much more than a battle of skill and nerve told in scorecards. On a links course, every hole is made new as the wind and weather shifts; it has been this way since the first golfers placed the first tees into the first turf. A truth that we have lived out for over 150 years: this is golf’s original, timeless test.
